How It Works

Runners usually talk in pace — minutes per mile — but speed in miles per hour (mph) is easier to compare across activities and easier for most people to picture. This converter moves between the two, which helps when you're chasing a specific time, sizing up your effort against other sports, or setting training targets you can actually hold. It's equally useful for plotting race strategy ahead of a marathon or a neighborhood 5K.

Turning pace into speed takes one short step: divide 60, the number of minutes in an hour, by your pace in minutes per mile. A 9-minute mile, for instance, works out to 60 minutes / 9 minutes/mile = 6.67 mph. The results also show the pace per kilometer and the finish time that pace gives over a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon.

One thing the number hides is that pace is an average across the whole distance, while your real speed rises and falls as you run. The conversion also assumes flat, still conditions, leaving out elevation, wind resistance, and fatigue, all of which bite into actual performance. Factor those forces back in before you carry a converted speed into a training plan or a race-day prediction.

Example: Target Pace for a Half Marathon

  1. 1 You want to finish a half marathon (13.1 miles) in 2 hours 15 minutes, which is 135 minutes.
  2. 2 Required pace: 135 ÷ 13.1 = 10.31 minutes per mile, or about 10:18 per mile.
  3. 3 Enter 10 minutes and 18 seconds. That is 618 seconds per mile, so the speed is 3,600 ÷ 618 = 5.83 mph, and 618 ÷ 1.60934 = 384 seconds, or 6:24, per kilometer.
  4. 4 The race table lists a half marathon at 2:15:02 for that pace. The extra two seconds come from rounding the pace down to 10:18 and from the half marathon's exact 21.0975 km (13.11 miles), so hold a touch under 10:18 on race day to bank the goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good mile time for a recreational runner?
A good beginner running pace is 10-12 minutes per mile (5-6 mph). Most new runners should focus on completing distance rather than speed. A comfortable conversational pace indicates proper effort.
How do you convert pace to speed?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile to get mph. For example, a 7:30 pace (7.5 min/mile) equals 8.0 mph (60 / 7.5).
What pace do I need to run a sub-4-hour marathon?
A sub-4-hour marathon requires maintaining a pace of 9:09 per mile or faster over 26.2 miles. This equals roughly 6.55 mph average speed for the entire race.
