How It Works

Drinks assume a 4-hour party: Beer Only counts 2 beers per guest per hour, bought in 24-can cases at $12; Beer + Cocktails counts 1.5 beers and 0.5 cocktails per guest per hour, with each $25 bottle of liquor making 15 drinks; Non-Alcoholic is $3 a head. Plates, cups and napkins add $20 for up to 12 guests, $30 for up to 20 and $40 above that, and decorations a flat $25.

The line items that catch hosts off guard tend to be ice, extra seating, and any entertainment if you're going all out. Drink consumption is easy to lowball, so it pays to pad that figure. Dietary needs among your guests can also widen the food variety, nudging the cost up a bit.

Example: Hosting 12 Guests on Game Day

  2. 2 Food: 12 × $15 = $180. Beer: 12 × 1.5 × 4 hours = 72 beers, or 3 cases × $12 = $36. Cocktails: 12 × 0.5 × 4 = 24 drinks, or 2 bottles (15 drinks each, rounded up) × $25 = $50. Drinks total $86.
  3. 3 Supplies add $20 and decorations $25, for a total of $311, or $25.92 per guest.
  4. 4 Switching to Snacks Only and non-alcoholic drinks brings the same party down to $177 ($96 food, $36 drinks, $20 supplies, $25 decorations). Making some dishes yourself or asking guests to bring one cuts it further.
