How It Works

Splitting a check and settling on a fair tip shouldn't require napkin math at the table. Enter your bill and a percentage, and you'll get the tip amount and each person's share right away. Gratuities carry real weight for the people serving you, and a clear number keeps things fair for everyone involved.

Two formulas drive the result: Tip Amount = (Bill Total × Tip Percentage), and Per Person Share = (Bill Total + Tip Amount) / Number of People. Type in any custom percentage, or tap one of the presets: 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%. Either way the split stays accurate down to the cent.

What counts as a good tip depends on the service and the venue; the Emily Post Institute's tipping guide puts sit-down restaurant service at 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill and buffet service at 10%. The calculator applies the percentage to whatever amount you enter, so if you tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that rather than the total with tax. If a coupon or discount lowered the bill, decide whether to tip on the original amount, since the service was the same, and enter that figure.

Example: Dinner with Friends

  1. 1 You and three friends had dinner, and the bill comes to $125.75. You want to tip 20% for excellent service.
  2. 2 First, calculate the tip: $125.75 × 0.20 = $25.15. Then, add the tip to the bill: $125.75 + $25.15 = $150.90. Finally, divide by the number of people: $150.90 / 4 = $37.73.
  3. 3 The total tip is $25.15, making the total bill $150.90. Each person owes $37.73.
  4. 4 This calculation ensures everyone contributes their fair share. Each person's part of the tip is $25.15 / 4 = $6.29, which the calculator shows as Per Person Tip.
