How It Works

The right tip depends on the service. This calculator gives a suggested range for seven common services: a percentage of the bill for most of them, and a flat dollar amount for hotel housekeeping and valet parking.

The ranges are fixed in the calculator: restaurant 18-25% of the bill, food delivery 15-20%, hair salon or barber 15-25%, taxi or rideshare 15-20% and movers 15-20%, while hotel housekeeping and valet parking show a flat $3-$5 whatever amount you enter. There is no location or service-quality input, and the ranges are customs rather than a published standard. For comparison, the Emily Post Institute's tipping guide lists 15-20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down restaurant service, 10-15% for delivery, 15-20% for a hair salon or taxi, and $2-$5 for hotel housekeeping (per day) and for valet parking. If you have your own percentage in mind, enter it as a custom tip and the calculator shows that amount as well.

A few habits trip people up: tipping on the post-tax total instead of the pre-tax amount inflates the figure on big restaurant bills, and exceptional service often goes under-rewarded. For many service workers, tips make up a real share of their pay, so let the quality you received guide the number, with a baseline tip expected even when service is merely satisfactory.

Example: A $120 Restaurant Bill

  1. 1 Input: Service Type - Restaurant, Bill Amount - $120.00, Custom Tip % - 22.
  2. 2 Range: the calculator's restaurant range is 18-25%, so 18% × $120.00 = $21.60 and 25% × $120.00 = $30.00. Recommended Tip shows $21.60 - $30.00 and Total with Tip $141.60 - $150.00.
  3. 3 Custom tip: 22% × $120.00 = $26.40, shown as a third result.
  4. 4 Context: the Emily Post Institute's guide lists 15-20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down service, which on $120.00 is $18.00 - $24.00, so the calculator's range starts above that. Enter the pre-tax amount if that is the figure you tip on.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?
The Emily Post Institute's tipping guide lists 15-20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down service and 10% at a buffet; this calculator's restaurant range is higher, 18-25%. If a coupon or discount lowered the bill, consider tipping on the original amount, since the service was the same. For large parties, check the menu or receipt for an automatic gratuity so you don't tip twice.
How much do you tip for food delivery?
The Emily Post Institute's guide suggests 10-15% of the bill for delivery, and $2-5 for pizza delivery depending on the size of the order and how difficult the delivery is. This calculator's delivery range is 15-20%. Bad weather or a large order is a reason to tip toward the top.
Who should you tip and how much?
From the Emily Post Institute's tipping guide: restaurant servers 15-20% of the pre-tax bill, bartenders $1-$2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab, hotel housekeeping $2-$5 per day, hair salon 15-20%, taxi 15-20% of the fare, valet $2-$5 and food delivery 10-15%. That guide does not cover movers or grocery delivery; this calculator uses 15-20% of the bill for movers.
