How It Works
Heating with propane means planning ahead for both the monthly bill and the fill-ups, and this tool puts both on one screen. EIA's weekly survey put the US residential propane price at about $2.55 a gallon on average over winter 2025-26 (October to March, ranging $2.42 to $2.68), which is the calculator's default; local delivered prices vary widely, so type in the price from your own supplier.
Three inputs drive the result. Your monthly usage in gallons times the price gives the monthly cost, and twelve months of that gives the annual cost. The tank size sets the refill cost: tanks are filled to 80% of capacity to leave room for the gas to expand, so a 500-gallon tank takes 400 gallons. For comparison, the tool converts your propane into the same heat from natural gas (91,500 Btu per gallon = 0.915 therm) at EIA's 2025 average residential price of $1.48 a therm.
Usage swings with the season, so a single monthly figure is an average: a furnace-heated home can burn several times more in January than in July. Tank sizing cuts both ways: a bigger tank costs more up front but means fewer deliveries and lets you fill up in summer, when prices are usually lower, while a small tank forces frequent winter deliveries at peak prices.
Example: A 500-Gallon Tank Heating a Home
- 1 Input: Tank Size = 500 gallons, Monthly Usage = 80 gallons (about 960 gallons a year for heat, hot water and cooking), Price = $2.55 per gallon.
- 2 Monthly cost: 80 x $2.55 = $204.00. Annual cost: $204.00 x 12 = $2,448.00.
- 3 Refill: the tank holds 500 x 80% = 400 gallons, so a full fill costs 400 x $2.55 = $1,020.00, roughly five months of average use.
- 4 Natural gas comparison: 80 gallons x 0.915 therm = 73.2 therms, which at $1.48 a therm is about $108 a month. That gap is why homes with a gas main nearby rarely heat with propane; where there is no main, the comparison shows what a conversion would save only if a line can be run.
