Reading Time Calculator

Estimating how long a piece of text takes to read, based purely on its word count, turns out to be useful well beyond curiosity. Content creators, students, and anyone building a presentation can use it to keep an audience engaged rather than overwhelmed.

Two speeds drive the estimates. Reading time uses 238 words per minute by default, the average adult silent reading rate for English non-fiction in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis of 190 studies; you can switch to 150 (slow) or 350 (fast) words per minute. Speaking time uses a more measured 130 words per minute to allow for the pauses and pacing that come with delivering material aloud. The calculator also counts pages at 250 words per page and rounds each time to the nearest minute.

Treat the output as a guide rather than a stopwatch, since how fast someone reads swings widely with the difficulty of the text, how familiar they are with the topic, and their own habits. Leaving a buffer is wise, particularly before anything high-stakes. And note that speaking almost always takes longer than silent reading, so planning a talk around reading time is how presentations end up rushed or running long.
