This tool handles that case cleanly, which makes it practical for logging freelance project hours, measuring employee shift lengths, or just settling how long an event actually ran. The math starts by converting both the start and end times into a single unit, usually the number of minutes elapsed since a reference point such as midnight. When the end time lands earlier than the start time, that signals an overnight span, so 24 hours (1440 minutes) are added to the end value before the subtraction happens. The resulting difference in minutes is then translated back into hours and leftover minutes to give a readable answer.

A quick word on accuracy: hours go in on a 24-hour clock (0–23), so 10:30 PM is entered as 22 and 30, and typing 10 for an evening hour is the most common slip. The tool counts clock time, so a shift that spans the night the clocks change (2:00 AM on the second Sunday of March or the first Sunday of November) actually ran an hour less or an hour more than shown. The calculation also assumes one unbroken stretch inside a 24-hour cycle and makes no allowance for breaks or pauses unless you build them into the input times yourself. Durations that genuinely run across several days fall outside its scope, since it reports only the portion within a single 24-hour window and disregards the day count entirely.
